Bobby Parish Medical Support

Donation protected
Shirley and Bobby Parish from Malvern, Arkansas are in need of support and financial assistance from family and friends. On August 6, Bobby began having stroke-like symptoms and was transported by ambulance to the hospital, where they found he was experiencing bleeding in the brain. After a transfer to Baptist Hospital in Little Rock, Shirley and Bobby were shocked to learn the bleeding was caused by two golf ball-sized tumors. The tumors were cancerous—metastasized from an undetected lung cancer. Two days later Bobby had brain surgery to remove the tumors. The surgery was successful; however, he lost the ability to move his left arm and leg. He remained in the intensive care unit until August 10 when he was transferred to the inpatient floor. There, Bobby was able to begin physical and occupational therapy and made enough progress to enter Acute Rehabilitation at Saline Memorial Hospital. On August 15, he began rehabilitation to improve the function of his left side. Bobby will return home on Saturday, August 25, though he will have to use a walker with a platform for his left arm. Hopefully, next week he will be able to begin radiation and chemotherapy.

Shirley and Bobby have a wonderful, loving family including their three children, MacKinzy, B. J. and Kassy, and numerous adoring grandchildren. But they will need a lot of extra support in the coming months. Bobby is a devoted husband, and has cared for Shirley during many hospitalizations. Because of her ongoing illness and disability, Shirley has been unable to work since 2007. She is concerned about finances and her ability to care for Bobby as he goes through treatment and recovery.

Bobby will receive short-term disability—30% of his normal take-home salary—for 12 weeks. Bobby’s insurance through work requires a $2,500 deductible and $2,000 out-of-pocket maximum. This insurance will end on November 1. Shirley has already applied for disability assistance, but it will not go into effect for at least 5 months. In the meantime, they will need to pay for expensive COBRA coverage. Shirley will also need help caring for Bobby at home, and they will need to make necessary adaptions to the bathroom and a ramp since Bobby has limited mobility.

Please help us show support and love to the Parish family. Our goal is to raise $15,000 to help Shirley and Bobby with their expenses for the next few months, provide insurance for Bobby so he can continue cancer treatments, adapt their home to be handicap-accessible and to provide in-home care.

Donations can also be made to MacKinzy Chaney’s church, Glen Rose Missionary Baptist, care of Brother Tony Williams or mailed to 928 Traskwood Rd, Malvern, AR 72104.

All donations will be extremely appreciated. Please share this information and request prayers at your church. Thank you very much!
