Let me tell you about JIA, and how she is a thief. She is stealing my money, and she is stealing my daughters ability to live an active normal life (like all 5 year old should)!
Polyarticular Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (Poly-JIA) is a less common subset of JIA, which involves arthritis in many (five or more) joints, often with finger involvement.
Although young children may also have this form of arthritis, teenagers with poly-JIA and a positive rheumatoid factor blood test have an arthritis that resembles adult rheumatoid arthritis.
Poly-JIA is a very intense arthritis that requires the use of medicines, such as Disease-Modifying-Anti-Rheumatic-Drugs (DMARDs) or biologics in order to treat the arthritis and prevent joint damage, deformed joints, and disability. Currently Emily has 3 out of 3.
Because Emily is ANA+ (fancy for inflammation bloodwork) she requires close monitoring by an ophthalmologist to make sure she is not losing her vision as well. ($)
Emily is going to start a new medication called Enbrel (I have to inject this, as well as methotrexate once weekly into her skinny awesome arms). Enbrel has an estimated cost of $2700 a month. Amgen has an assistance program to eliminate up $6k annually. Amgen, you sincerely rock! (This is where I become bankrupt)
The doctor has also ordered physical, and occupational therapy so Emily can regain strength she has lost (she can't even climb steps, folks. Her hello kitty bike sits begging to be ridden...heck, she even got a disabled parking permit yesterday because she simply can barely walk.)
I really wouldn't ask or expect anyone to donate anything but positive thoughts to Emily, and her healing. I am not, however, above asking for a "money grab" towards my motorcycle endorsement class. Have to keep it legal, guys! Just kidding! All monies raised will go directly to the benefit of Emily, to help her have enjoyment and quality of life! <3
