Help end the Sacrifice at Gadhimai Festival

About the Festival

Gadhimai festival is a sacrificial ceremony that is held every 5 years at the Gadhimai Temple of Bariyarpur, in Bara District, about 200 Km south of the capital Kathmandu, and about 7 km east of headquarter of Bara district Kalaiya city, in southern Nepal, near the Indo-Nepal border, adjacent to Bihar. It is primarily celebrated by the people of Nepal & India. Until the event in 2014, the event involved the large-scale sacrificial slaughter of animals including water buffaloes, goats, chickens, and pigeons – with the goal of pleasing Gadhimai, the goddess of power. People also offer coconuts, sweets, red color clothes, etc.

The Supreme Court of Nepal on a case filed by Advocate Arjun Kumar Aryal (Writ No. 071-WO-0371), Rajyalaxmi Golcha (Writ No. 071-WO-0372) & Gita Prasad Dahal (Writ No. 071-WO-0373) has given a full order directing the relevant agencies to create an action plan to discourage and eventually end animal sacrifice at Gadhimai and elsewhere in the country.

The Gadhimai Festival this year has already started on November 17, 2019, and the day of the sacrifice is December 4th.

Why we need your Help?

Indian Government has already banned the transport of animals from India to Nepal for the sacrifice in Gadhimai festival. This means no live animals can be brought to Nepal legally and to ensure the implementation of this decision of the Indian government they have mobilized their resources on their border side.

As we know that there is an open border between India and Nepal, its implementation is quite difficult from Indian side only. Therefore, FAWN is mobilizing the human resources in the nearby border side from where there is a high chance of transporting the animals for sacrifice. We’ve already mobilized our resources in one border and soon will be adding two more major border entry point after we ensure this fund. This fund will help us to mobilize more human resources at the last minute of the campaign and thousands of lives of the animals can be saved. More volunteers for the border patrol will lead to less animal sacrifice.

For more updates on how FAWN is working to control the transportation of animals from India to Nepal during the festival, follow us on Facebook , Instagram & Website .
