In April 2014, Jessie started having random chest pains. When she went to urgent care, the doctors did an X-ray, noticed she had scoliosis, and sent her home to “Take it easy”.  Not being satisfied with that observation, she sought medical advice from a physiatrist (bone structure doctor) who said the pain has nothing to do with the slight curvature in her spine and the chest pain must be caused by something else. Jessie agreed and went to her primary care doctor and advocated for further testing. The doctor suspected the pericardium (the sac that holds your heart) was inflamed, prescribed her some anti-inflammatory drugs, and sent her home. In May, the chest pains continued and she adamantly requested to see a cardiologist who was kind enough to order an echo in a few weeks, since her primary care doctor “didn’t feel it was necessary”. On May 30th the tech who performed the echo said the heart was normal and the pericardium was not inflamed after all. Later that day, her cardiologist called and left a voicemail that dramatically changed Jessie’s life. After reviewing the echo, she informed Jessie that she had a rather large mass above her heart and they would need to do a CT scan asap. Later that day it was confirmed, there was a mass, (5.9cm to be exact) above her heart.

In June 2014 she had two biopsies; the first was a needle biopsy which came back inconclusive. The second biopsy was a bit more invasive. They had to go through the chest, take a piece of (regenerating!) cartilage out in between the ribs in order to access the mass beneath. On June 28, 2014 Jessie's biopsy results came back and the pathology report diagnosed her with primary mediastinal large B-cell lymphoma. On July 2, 2014 she met with the oncologist and was told her only option to “cure the cancer" is with chemotherapy and was given the long list of possibilities that could happen to her body. They also encouraged her to see a fertility specialist to harvest her eggs right away to increase the odds of having children in the future, but there was no guarantee. The oncologist protocol: a hospital stay of six days, where Jessie would receive a chemo IV 24 hours a day for five straight days, come back in 3 weeks, and repeat for five more treatments.

With the support of her husband and mother, Jessie made the decision that chemotherapy is not a first option of treatment.  Jessie feels her body deserves more, as do other cancer patients. Every fiber in her being told her that chemotherapy is not a lasting, safe, or even effective treatment of cancer. She means no disrespect to anyone who has been affected by chemo in both positive and negative ways. Jessie believes our bodies are amazingly capable of so many things, including healing, if given the right treatment, and she does not believe that chemo is the first and right treatment for her.  Jessie is pursuing alternative and naturopathic medicine to treat her condition and is following the path set forth by other natural survivors. They are out there!

How is she going to accomplish this? She has already started naturopathic treatments in Santa Cruz. There are quite a bit of alternative treatments available to eradicate cancer from your body, starting with going vegan. Most practices have no mainstream backing via media/research/funding, no affiliations with the pharmaceutical industry and consequently, the insurance companies do not cover alternative or naturopathic medicine.

The main treatment she is seeking is the Gerson Therapy, which practices techniques that simultaneously nourishes and strengthens your immune system and detoxifies the body. It is believed that only in this way, can your body truly heal itself. Every case is different, and there are some types of cancers that the therapy is unable to treat. Fortunately, The Gerson Therapy has historically had success treating lymphomas. There is hope!

On July 14, 2014 Jessie was accepted to be a patient at the Gerson Clinic in Mexico. The minimum length of stay for treatment is two weeks. Jessie and her husband Steve will get hands on training to practice the therapy at home for the required two years following their stay.  The Gerson Clinic and the necessary non-toxic treatments are costly and not covered by insurance. Jessie has yet to go back to work since she learned of the (shrinking) mass, and money is starting to become an added hardship. This therapy will build up her body and regenerate it on a cellular level the way Mother Nature intended before resorting to more chemical pollution. She knows it is a bold move, but she’s 29 and on the cusp of turning 30. She has so much more life to live, memories to make, and would still like to start a family of her own in the near future. In addition to starting a family, she would also like to contribute to something great and profound by giving people a voice and the opportunity to heal themselves naturally. Jessie feels that whole body healing can only be accomplished in this way, without toxic chemicals, and with your love and support. Thank you all for your positivity, thoughts, and prayers.
