Blind Hairdresser in Jamaica

Donation protected
For 25 years, Beverly ‘Tashy’ Burry, who is blind, has been fending for herself by working as a hairdresser and craftswoman in her community of Tivoli Gardens.

She has been selling custom-made gift baskets outside supermarkets in Kingston to create a steady stream of income.
But since the COVID-19 pandemic, she has found herself in need of assistance.

LOST HER SIGHT IN 1995
Burry, 48, has been on her own ever since she lost her sight in 1995 during a domestic dispute. But COVID has brought many restrictions and she fears catching it.

“I have high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Every now and then, I get to do a one and two hair. It’s mostly men who want to lock their hair. I don’t go to the supermarket to sell the bags again, and that was just hand to mouth. I have to stay inside so things slow,” she said. But Burry is grateful for life and believes God will help her see again.

“Me dream already seh me wake up one day and can see,” she said. “I have a great feeling that I can see again, but I have no help whatsoever. Sometimes I see a little red thing in my eyes like blood … my eyes are not dead. I don’t know if a surgery could be done because I didn’t look around. I didn’t have any money, so I didn’t shop around to any doctor. But I’m just hoping for the best.”
