Blessings For The Burks

Meet the Burks!  This incredible family urgently needs our love and support, and we invite you to join in on their blessing! Here is their story.

In 2014, Brian and Jessica Burks were victims of a drunk driving accident. They suffered many prolonged medical issues as a result, which prevented them from being able to work, and quickly rendered them homeless. They currently live in an old van in Downtown San Diego with their 3 small (adorable) children.

In Jessica's words, she and Brian have an "indomitable spirit" - they are determined to get back on their feet and reach their goals, but they do need some specific help right now.  They are continuing to receive medical treatment, and are currently pursuing school - Jessica is studying to be a nurse and lactation educator, and Brian is a digital art major. 

They have many needs as a homeless family including:
- A reliable vehicle: their current van is barely hanging on, so they need a newer van or SUV that runs well, passes CA smog, and seats at least 8 people. Pricing can vary, but through Costco's used car program, they are hopeful they can find one on the lower end for around $3,500.
- Career education costs: $700 would get Jessica back into her lactation education program so she can pick back up with starting her career.
- Daily life expenses: Any extra funds would help cover gas to get Brian to and from school, as well as other basic needs for their family to get by each day (food, toiletries, phone expenses, etc). 

So where do we fit in?  We are a group of co-workers who had the pleasure of meeting the Burks on a recent trip to serve the homeless in our community.  In the midst of handing out blankets and McDonald's burgers, Brian waved us down from across the street to see if we'd come help his family in their van - best decision we ever made! They took the time to share their story, and we were touched by their infectious energy and unwavering joy. We knew we had to do something to help, so here we are!


All available funds will be withdrawn by Brian and Jessica directly. We are in close contact with them, so we will certainly keep you all updated as we go!  A few words from Jessica in the meantime: "We believe in giving back and never giving up. I know that one day I will be in a position to help others on a larger scale, but thank you for helping me."
