Black Healing TO
Black Healing TO is a grassroots organization focused on Black & Afro Indigenous well being.
Black Healing T.O was founded by anti-oppressive social worker Melissa Taylor. Proceeds from this fundraiser will go towards subsiding therapy and other healing practices for Afro-Indigenous and Black residents of Ontario.
When you donate towards Black Healing T.O., you are investing in your community, not just Black communities. Communities of children,
parents, neighbours, healers, elders, and much more. When Black communities are well, you are well. We cannot heal without collective care, and community care includes you. Black liberation is interconnected.
What is inspired this fundraiser?
As a Black therapist, I have experienced and witnessed anti-Black racism in the non-profit and private sector. I believe, Black individuals and families should have greater access to competent mental health services to decrease the risk of profiling and systemic harm from health care; law enforcement, and social services.
History of Black Healing TO
BHTO started August 2020 in the wake of the dual pandemic: covid-19 and anti-Black racism. We have raised a little over $10,000 to date, and will distribute 10 $1100 therapy bursaries by the end of August 2021. BHTO has been volunteer run from the start, and Melissa has not financially benefited from any of the donations to date.
Future Funding Model
85% of all fund raised will go directly to individuals who need therapeutic supports and 15% will help subsidy Melissa existing clients. Funds will be directed to the participants chosen therapist.
