BioJam Teen Camp Kits & Program

Tax deductible
Want to join me in making a difference for teens this summer? Support Xinampa as it supports the BioJam Camp send playful bio/art/engineering kits to teens in this free camp.

BioJam engages teens through their own creativity and culture in bioengineering and biomaterial design as pathways for them to share their learning with their home communities. This summer we will engage teens through physical custom kits and online meetings as they imagine the future of PPE as the new exciting frontier of R&D innovation design

Last summer’s 2019 BioJam week-long pilot program camp was fueled by the donated time and resources of the instructors. To grow, we need your help to secure funding. The 2020 camp will include 12 teens: 3 from East San Jose, 3 from East Salinas and 3 from Oakland, California. We need to raise funds for the kits we will send to each student. Each kits is $65.00. We have 12 campers and 4 near peer assistants who will be receiving the kits. The camp will run from July 13th through July 24th.

During the school year, BioJam camp participants have the opportunity to collaborate and develop social media content, online activity resources, and physical kits to connect their communities to science and technology through art and design. They will do this by sharing their PPE prototypes as prompts to other teens and communities via Instagram takeovers and a range of online tutorials that deepen conversations and impact on neighborhoods often left out of innovation and biotechnology discussions.

Here are last year’s BioJam teens workshops: https://biojamcamp.weebly.com/community-events.html

Donated funds will support the creation of the kits and student explorations in blended bioengineering research and creative biomaterial fabrication that cultivate equity, empower low-income, disadvantaged, and underserved communities, as well as engage these communities in discussions of biotechnology governance and innovation.  Any additional funds raised will go towards instructor, student programming stipends, and near peer teen assistant stipends.

Project Goals: Engage a youth audience from rural and urban backgrounds in the region to surface their thoughts and ideas around effective PPE that blends culture, sustainable systems, and biotechnology. Create opportunities for youth to blend art, bio and technology in playful, hands on-way. Nurture teen voices in prompting conversations with community centered on the future of PPE.

Format: Asynchronous and synchronous engagement of regional youth using a combination of physical kits sent to homes and digital platforms for feedback, dialogue, and discourse. The physical kits will be a means of gaining trust and providing a shared engaging experience that can help to draw youth into participating in meaningful conversations around these challenging and often intimidating topics.
