Hey everyone, some of you may know me and have an understanding of my gender journey, and for some of you this might be the first you are hearing of it. It’s a personal thing for me to share, and for the most part I don’t talk about it because it feels pretty vulnerable.
I’m nonbinary and trans masc and I’ve finally come to a point where I feel brave enough to ask for help in accessing the medical care which will allow me to feel at home and safe in my body.
Top surgery is something that I’ve realised I need, which is an exciting realisation! It’s also terrifying because of the many hurdles between me and realising that. It’s scary to think of all of the money stuff, on top of the appointments, medical requirements and recovery to go through. It’s a big process.
The last couple of years have been particularly hard for me. In general my life has been focused on surviving and trying to rebuild after a lot of loss and struggle. Top surgery is one of the major changes I could make which would truly improve my quality of life and ability to function in the world.
Unfortunately because of health issues I can’t work and I get just enough from centrelink to pay for housing, food, bills and living essentials. These physical limitations and general lack of resources makes it hard to do any of this alone. So the only way I can access this much-needed surgery is to ask for help from my loved ones, extended community, and really anyone who can afford to help me out. I’ve made this fundraiser in the hope of some extra support, any contribution helps and is deeply appreciated!
I’m anticipating the total cost to be upward of $10,000. This estimate is based on what I know other people have had to pay for the same procedure with this surgeon, without private health insurance. My consult is at the end of May, after that I’ll have a more clear idea of minimum cost so I can update this with a detailed breakdown later. That cost could go up by a few thousand depending on complications, revisions, extra nights in hospital, additional support needed during recovery, etc. I would love to book in for surgery as soon as possible, and once I have the funds I’ll be able to do so.
