Grandpa's life was unexpectedly and tragically changed and, so was his income, in just one given day, forever!

My grandpa was a licensed land surveyor since 1970.  His license expires on September 30, 2016 and it will be the first time in 46 years that he will not be renewing his license.  I always knew what a great grandpa he was but I have discovered in the last four months how loved, respected an admired he was by his peers, customers and friends in this community.  Anyone who we have come into contact with that knows my grandpa had only the utmost respect and nice things to say about him.  I want to thank all of you and, you know who you are, for being there for my grandpa in the past years.

They have had great hardships in the past year and have no reprieve in sight.  The economy in 2009 was the beginning of their tragic story.  My grandparents were a victim of a scam, a company claiming they would negotiate with your mortgage company and do a modification, for a price.  This caused them to fall behind in their mortgage and, cost thousands.  Shortly after that period is when my grandpa changed.  Something was different; we just couldn’t figure it out, but knew he was ill.  Mom and grandma had taken him to some of the best doctors in Philadelphia, with no success.  This past spring grandpa went to a neuro surgeon here in Vineland and diagnosed my grandpa with hydrocephalus, or "water on the brain."  The doctor suggested a spinal tap to ascertain whether surgery would be necessary or advantageous.  Doc suggested that the family would see a change and would know if the surgery was needed, before the doctor would.  After the procedure, grandpa was “grandpa again.” We now know the surgery may help.  Surgery was scheduled for the next week.  On May 6th he had the surgery and was recovering well after spending five days in the hospital.  Just a few days after being home he complained of a headache and was told to immediately go to the emergency room.  We were told he had a bleed on the brain but,  was not sure how it happened, it was a major setback.  Since then, grandpa has not been himself, in and out of hospitals and rehabilitation centers now, almost totally incapacitated and, in a nursing home.  We now are not sure if he will ever be able to come home again.

Grandpa loved being a land surveyor and worked hard all his life to provide for his family.  His genetics was great as his grandparents and parents lived to be well in their 90’s.  He had a triple bypass in February of 1993 when my mom was pregnant with me and, several years ago had a pacemaker put in otherwise, he was healthy and the doctor said his heart was in good shape.  Mom always said that grandpa would work until he couldn’t anymore but, we thought that day would come a long time from now.  My grandpa worked up until the day he went in for the first hospital procedure.

Unfortunately, grandpa was the only licensee and when he could no longer work, the business could not continue and, had to be immediately shut down.  Sadly there was no one there to carry on his legacy.  Once the business shut down, so did their income.

The last several years have been very hard on them and the business.  The fall of the real estate market in 2009 crushed his business as most of it depended on the sale of homes and construction, grandpa went without a paycheck so his employees, mostly family could be paid.  Since he wasn’t taking a paycheck, they relied on their life savings.  Last fall they were a victim of a scam, as they thought they were working with a company that would help them do a modification on their home.  Instead, they paid thousands to a company they thought was helping them, rather than robbing them.  It was shortly after that, that grandpa fell ill and everything has been downhill since.

I feel for my grandparents as they were always good, caring people who did their best and worked hard all their life and lived a good life, only to have economy, scandals and, an illness that went catastrophic and blindsided them.  They don’t have a great family circle either and, depend mostly on themselves, me and my mom.

Since June 7th, the business has been left hanging, some employees just walked away and, therefore no chance of the business finding a surveyor and continuing on.  We thought grandpa would be there until his mid-80, at least, as he always said he would not retire and, would be there as the licensee to continue on.  There are a lot of loose ends that need to be dealt with and my grandma doesn’t know how to do it and, in order to do so, needs to hire an accountant and an attorney, who are expensive and whom she cannot afford.  They are living only on social security and with no other income therefore; they cannot afford to pay their insurances for health, life, and prescription and, their mortgage as well.  Grandpa cannot afford to lose his medical insurance because of his ongoing and unforeseen medical and nursing home bills.

I implore you to look at their tragic story and from the bottom of my heart ask that you kindly find it in your heart to give just a little.  They were blindsided and never, never in a million years thought that something like this would happen in a snap of a finger and be the position they are in today.  They went from being full of life one day to a catastrophic sudden stop the next.

Again, grandpa's life was unexpectedly taken away and so was his income, in just one given day.
