It took seven emergency agencies and the help of concerned motorists to rescue a family of six Tuesday afternoon after their SUV went careening off State Route 260, flipping end over end down a hill and then catching fire.

The family was traveling eastbound about 3:20 p.m. and had just passed the Paleo Site near milepost 267 when the driver lost control in the sleeting rain. The black SUV went through the guardrail and flipped between four to six times down the 100-foot hill, said Capt. Rick Heron with Hellsgate Fire Department, who acted as command on the scene.

A passerby didn’t witness the vehicle leave the road, but saw smoke coming from the area and stopped to investigate, Heron said.

Firefighters freed the man who was pinned and loaded him onto a stretcher. They then worked to put out the flames. Given how steep and slippery the hill was, it took the help of everyone on scene to carry him up.

Due to the pounding storm, all helicopters were grounded so paramedics ground transported the man to a Valley trauma center. The other passengers were taken to the hospital separately.

Bill the Grandfather is in the Trauma ICU and has a broken neck, many broken bones, lots of bruising, and has had to undergo surgery, and is on life support.

Peola the Grandmother suffered three broken ribs, a punctured lung, lots of bruising and is still in the hospital recovering.

Velma their daughter suffered a shattered ankle and many bruises and is home now recovering.

The Three Grandchildren miraculously  left the scene with only scratches and are doing well at home playing as children should.

It is going to be quite the recovery process for all of these individuals and we appreciate anything you can do to help.

The family will also be having a special fast and prayer this Sunday July 23, 2017 and we ask for prayers in their behalf no matter what your faith or background is. We are grateful for all thoughts turned to God in their behalf and any positive thoughts sent their way.

We thank you, with love
