Bilikisu for Miss DC USA 2019

Nelson Mandela once stated that courage is not the absence of fear but the triumph over it. Life is about taking risks, having courage and jumping into the unknown.  And on December  8, 2018 I will be doing this. I will be competing for the title of Miss District of Columbia USA 2019. Having placed 3rd  in past competitions, I am encouraged and excited to compete again. Since this is the last year I am eligible to compete, it is crucial that I take this one last shot! I have been on this journey for the past 6 years and the experience has really molded me into becoming a strong and resilient woman that I continuously admire.

My purpose for competing is still the same, I have a message for the youth in my community, my plan is to inspire them through my platform Take Charge of Your Destiny. I want to remind them that it does not matter if you grew up in an alcoholic environment or your parents are incarcerated or you did not grow up with the right socioeconomic class, YOU get to decide who you become.

Getting to decide who you become became apparent to me at an early age. I grew up in an abusive environment where I was constantly told that I would not surmount  to anything in life, which caused me to believe that there was no bright future ahead of me. This deeply impacted my identity, self-esteem and confidence. But I did not allow this to deter me from working hard towards a successful future. I was able to transform this negative experience into a positive message which is my platform today. The experience and  platform is the reason why I return to the stage every year for the opportunity to use the crown of Miss DC USA to spread my message of “Take Charge of Your Destiny” because I believe “YOU” are the captain of your ship and you do not have to accept the labels others place on you.

As you know this is an expensive competition, and I hope you decide to become my sponsorer. Your sponsorship will assist me in covering the cost of preparing for the pageant competition. And  when you donate, you are not just giving your money but instead you are saying “I believe in your dreams” and that means a lot to me and it inspires me to keep going. Finally, THANK YOU for being on this journey with me one last time. Now, let’s go get that CROWN‼!
