Education for the poorest of the poor in Congo

My name is Tabea Riziki and I am married to Patrick, who was born and raised in Eastern Congo. We are both doctors and have worked for many years and got to know each other at the operating table of a small hospital in Patrick's home country.

Unimaginable for me as a German: Patients have to stay in the hospital as a ransom, until someone can pay the hospital costs. And who in this area can manage that? 85% of the people live below the poverty line - earn less than 1.5$/day and live without health insurance. For children who have missed more than 3 months of school, it`s not even allowed to return because of the long absence.

We have been working with the Congolese association JengaTumaini (Building Hope) for more than 5 years among the poorest of the poor just outside the big city of Bukavu, South Kivu, Eastern Congo. It started with "ransoming" children from the hospital and providing education. Currently, over 150 children are able to go to school without worry. Our guiding verse is:

"There is only one thing more expensive in the long run than education - no education" (J F Kennedy).

In 2020, we opened a donation-funded training centre. Over 120 adults have already benefited from our training branches. At the moment we are in the process of building a primary school, the construction of which is supported by "Bild hilft e.V. Ein Herz für Kinder".

And now an important project is coming up: the opening of the primary school with high standards (Sept 2023). Children will be able to learn English, do sports, music lessons and also get to know laptops. For this we are building a photovoltaic system on the roof of the primary school with volunteers from Germany.

Please donate for the purchase of books for the primary school and for the run of the School. The library shelves were built by our volunteer team. We personally brought donated laptops to Kashusha. We bought books locally. We still lack some more books and material to run the school, around 95 Kids are still looking for a sponsor so they can attend school.

Ich heiße Tabea Riziki und bin mit Patrick, der aus dem Ost-Kongo stammt, verheiratet. Wir sind beide Ärzte und haben viele Jahre gearbeitet und uns am OP Tisch eines kleinen Krankenhauses in Patricks Heimat kennen gelernt.

Für mich als Deutsche unvorstellbar: Patienten bleiben als Pfand im Krankenhaus, wenn keiner die Therapiekosten bezahlen kann. Und wer kann das dort schon? 85% der Menschen leben unterhalb der Armutsgrenze - verdienen weniger als 1,5$/Tag und leben ohne Krankenversicherung. Wer dann mehr als 3 Monate Schule verpasst hat, darf gar nicht mehr hin aufgrund der langen Fehlzeit.

Wir arbeiten mit dem kongolesischen Verein JengaTumaini (Hoffnung bauen) seit über 5 Jahren unter den Ärmsten der Armen etwas außerhalb der Großstadt Bukavu, Süd-Kivu, Ost-Kongo. Es hat angefangen mit "Freikauf" von Kindern aus dem Krankenhaus und Bildung ermöglichen. Derzeit können über 150 Kinder sorgenfrei in die Schule gehen. Unser Leitvers ist:

2020 eröffneten wir das über Spenden finanzierte Ausbildungszentrum. Über 120 Erwachsene haben bereits von unseren Ausbildungszweigen profitiert. Im Moment sind wir im Bau einer Grundschule, deren Bau mit von “Bild hilft e.V. Ein Herz für Kinder” unterstützt wird.

Und nun steht ein wichtiges Projekt an: die Eröffnung der Grundschule mit hohem Standard (Sept 2023). Kinder sollen Englisch lernen können, Sport, Musikunterricht und auch Laptops kennen lernen dürfen. Dafür bauen wir noch eine Photovoltaik-Anlage mit freiwilligen Helfern aus Deutschland auf das Dach der Grundschule.

Bitte spende für den Kauf von Büchern für die Grundschule und dass die Schule beginnen kann. Die Bibliotheksregale wurden von unserem freiwilligen Team gebaut. Gespendete Laptops haben wir bereits hinbringen können, Bücher haben wir lokal erworben. Wir benötigen noch einige weitere Bücher und Materialien, um die Schule am Laufen zu halten. Ausserdem suchen wir noch nach Sponsoren für 95 Kinder.
