Jakari's Going to Ireland

Donation protected
Hey Folks,

About 20 years ago, I found my passion and gift in stepping. Since that time I haven't been able to leave it alone...or should I say, it hasn't left me alone. This tradition, while practiced by thousands of young people in America, is still widely unknown. Fewer still, even those who perform it, recognize it as a legitimate art form. Thus, in my artistic development, there have been no programs to explore the technique and principles of stepping – no scholarly forums to discuss the cultural context of this dance. Nevertheless, I have devoted my life to this artistry and to fostering an appreciation of stepping, in particular, as well as the wider genre of percussive dance.

I now desire time to engage in dialogue, not only about my work, but also about dance and choreography as a whole. By doing so, I hope to refine my voice and develop new approaches to add to my own methodologies. Without any prior dance training, I found my way into professional dance as a young man on a quest to prove to himself that there was more to stepping than the competitions in which I participated as a student. I am looking to begin a new chapter of exploration in an environment with scholars, educators, and inspired contemporaries with whom I can learn, grow, and share in the investigation of art and artistic process.

This September I'll be heading to Limerick, Ireland to begin a Master's program in Ethnochoreology. I am asking for your prayers and support as I embark on this new stage of my life, as well as  donations of $25 or more to help offset the cost of airfare, books and living expenses. Your generosity would also be an investment in me and the future development of the stepping tradition and dance as a whole. My commitment is to apply what I learn to my continued efforts to inspire youth and bring people together through stepping.

To put it another way,
I'm gonna keep doing what I do...only better!

Thanks,
Jakari
