WHERE?
-We visited Tegucigalpa, Honduras and El Paso/Juarez on the US/Mexico border.
WHEN?
-These happened in November 2019 and February 2020.
WHAT HAPPENED?
-Talked with about 30 people between the two trips for background interviews and formal interviews.
-Learned about complex root causes of migration in this region.
-Saw effects of policies like Remain in Mexico and reducing aid to Central America.
-Collected powerful stories and testimonies for shaping future podcast episodes.
-You all donated about $3300 to cover these travel and lodging costs!
HOW DID COVID AFFECT PRODUCTION PLANS?
-Two additional trips scheduled for March had to be canceled.
-Personal challenges related to Covid delayed production progress.
NOW WHAT?
-Brand new sponsorship will mostly cover 4 new episodes for early October release!
-Two of these will draw on Honduras material.
-Two will draw from earlier interviews conducted with a former refugee from Vietnam.
WHY ARE THESE IMPORTANT STORIES TO SHARE?
-Two areas of our immigration system that have changed MAJORLY since 2017 are refugee resettlement and asylum.
-These episodes provide a humanized look into each and ask "When it comes to policies that affect displaced people, what should we be looking for over the next four years as we move past Covid-19?"
