This past October my older sister was given news that no woman wants to ever hear. Especially as a mother of 4 children with the youngest only being just shy of 5 years old and the oldest having autism.
She found a lump. Truly nothing anyone wants to find especially after seeing your mother have to conquer breast cancer 14 years earlier. Not to mention having to watch our father go for treatment for testicular cancer. Fortunately both our parents survived which has instilled a rather odd sense of humor as we all would say something to the effect that its just a matter of time until they find cancer in us. The lump she'd would later came back positive for Breast Cancer. She has Invasive Intraductal Carcinoma. It’s also HER positive which means it’s estrogen fed and it has spread to her lymph nodes.
At this time her oncologist has put together an aggressive treatment plan. First they will be doing 4 treatments of Adriamycin and Cytoxan.
Then 12 weeks of Taxol, Herceptin, and perjeta. After that they will rescan and talk about surgery. The goal is to shrink the tumor enough to do a lumpectomy but that’s a hope. After all that she will still have to do a year on a chemo pill.
Thankfully the families insurance has covered quite a bit, however the costs of what they won't cover are piling up quickly (10k+ and the treatment has only just begun!) They have gone from a 2 income family down to 1 with her being unable to work throughout this time.
With all that said the medical expenses have been staggering to say the least and with more to follow. My sister is a rather proud woman and the thought of asking others for help is a bit much as no one wants to ask for others to help them with money. So my wife and I have taken it upon ourselves to try and find a way to help her. The goal is to hopefully raise enough to help cover her need for a new hat collection (yes awful joke I know but she'd expect nothing less of me) besides, paying the medical expenses would be a good idea as well I suppose. Once everything is said and done if there is any donations left I would love to donate to another family going through something similar or towards cancer research though I am open to suggestions from anyone.
I know there are thousands of people going through the same thing and if you happen upon this page and can't donate or have others that you're already helping please do us a favor and share this cause as well.
