Betty & Moe Education Scholarship

Don protégé
Today we rededicate this page to honor the passing of Betty Jane Steinberg, Uncle Moe's greatest champion, partner and co-educator in a lifetime dedicated to teaching young people.

Over the span of 40 years, Uncle Moe was "uncle", mentor, guide, and friend to many students and campers alike. His motto was always "to turn adversity to our advantage" as he sought to teach children and young adults to make the most of their lives and live life to its fullest. Always by his side, Betty, too, devoted her professional career to always guide her students to explore and expand their interest in athletics and dance.

In the wake of both of their passing, we -- his family -- would like Aunt Betty & Uncle Moe's legacy to be a financial scholarship to assist a deserving graduating senior who has an interest in pursuing a college degree in the arts, education, or athletics.

Uncle Moe's family has reestablished The Uncle Moe Memorial Scholarship Fund as The Betty & Moe Steinberg Education Scholarship Fund. Our hope and our long-term goal is to be able to give a deserving graduating senior a generous gift to put toward their educational expenses in college, and to raise enough money to build a perpetual educational scholarship fund in the memory of Betty & Moe Steinberg'.

About Betty & Moe Steinberg:
Betty & Moe met as undergrads in the field of education at NYU.

While Moe went to war during WWII and served on the Coast Guard Cutter Modoc, Betty continued toward her goal as an educator in Physical Education & Modern Dance.

Specially trained as a radio operator, he became an expert at Morse Code and would soon be at sea intercepting German U-Boat communications. When the war was over, Moe continued at NYU on the GI Bill and became a teacher.

Moe & Betty married when the war was over. Soon Moe would join Betty and her parents in their summer camp business in Maine. In the early years he was a counselor, but eventually found himself in charge of the kitchen (not his favorite job!) He didn't know it then, but he was becoming the future director of Camp Chickawah in Harrison, Maine.

Once graduated from NYU, Moe started out teaching elementary school, but over the years would find his niche on the junior high and high school levels as an art teacher in several school districts, eventually joining the faculty at Jamaica High School in Jamaica, Queens. As a member of the Jamaica HS art department, Moe would also take on a new extracurricular role -- as Yearbook Advisor, guiding a stellar student staff in producing many Jamaica HS yearbooks. Moe also brought Betty over to Jamaica HS where she enjoyed a long tenure of teaching Physical Education, Modern Dance, Yoga & Health.

We thank you for your kindness and generosity in helping to give a graduating senior an educational scholarship.

Thank you.
