Betsy's Fight Against Cancer

On April 15, 2017, Betsy Murray went to the ER at Wilson Medical Center after suffering a seizure. By the grace of God, most of her children were in town for Easter Sunday. After a long night of tests, it was discovered that Betsy had a lesion on her brain and she was admitted into the hospital. The following day an MRI confirmed a 4 cm tumor. Bravely, Betsy decided to undergo a biopsy, but because the tumor was on the brain, the biopsy would require a craniotomy. With all seven of her children at her side, she was wheeled off into surgery with a smile on her face saying “Look at all of my beautiful children. God is good!”
After about 6 hours, the surgeon informed the family that the tumor was a grade IV glioblastoma. He was able to remove most of the tumor during the procedure, but this form of aggressive cancer would still need ongoing treatment.
A grade IV glioblastoma is one of the most aggressive brain tumors and can spread quickly to other areas of the brain.
Her recovery from surgery was difficult but she was resilient throughout the process. Recovery from her brain surgery required further hospitalization for physical therapy as well as other rehabilitations. Betsy handled each new challenge with grace and positivity while each step of the way, reminding her children, family, and friends how blessed she was, as well as constantly thanking each and every one of her caregivers.
The next natural step for treatment was to explore her treatment options. Betsy traveled to MD Anderson Cooper in Camden, NJ as well as Sloan Kettering in NY to consider other care practices and clinical trials. She and her loved ones gathered and weighed all the information and options available, of course with time being of the essence. After much consideration and prayer, Betsy ultimately made the decision to stay in Binghamton, NY, and proceed with the standard of care from a well-respected local oncology team.
Her treatment has consisted of 6 weeks of radiation, and continuing chemotherapy, all of which she has handled with strength and grace. She is currently living with her youngest daughter, but is cared for by many.
Betsy Murray is a loving mother of 7, grandmother to 8, and long time employee at Endwell Family Physicians. She has spent the better part of her life taking care of others, and it is our turn to take care of her. She is surrounded by loving family, friends, and co-workers, but is now unable to work and will need support for continued therapies, medical bills, living expenses, etc.
