Berto's Fight

Until recently, Berto was a healthy thirty year old man who worked hard everyday to support his loving wife who is in school to become a physical therapy assistant.
Berto Zarco and his wife Jen have been together for eight years and got married in 2015. He is a recently appointed Journeyman Technician working at Jack Phelan Chevrolet.
In the beginning of 2017, he started suffering from gastrointestinal pains. After several visits to multiple doctors Berto scheduled an EGD to try and determine the cause of his stomach pains.
On May 3rd the EGD resulted in Berto aspirating and having to be admitted into the hospital. While admitted in the hospital doctors found a gastric ulcer and a mass obstructing his stomach into the small intestine. Biopsies were taken but at the time they did not have enough information to make a clear diagnosis.
Two weeks later on May 16th, Berto had another EGD and biopsy taken. Three days after that test Berto was diagnosed with gastric cancer.
Doctors scheduled surgery quickly to try and cut out the mass by removing half of Berto's stomach, but when they began the surgery they realized the mass was much bigger than it showed on their scans.
They performed a bypass so that Berto could eat and eventually tolerate chemotherapy. Hopefully, after chemotherapy the mass will shrink enough for doctors to be able to remove it.
In the meantime, Berto is staying positive and is fighting with full force against something nobody dreamed could have happened.
Berto's father passed away in 2016, but his mom, two brothers, and sister love and support him through this trying time.
He and his wife feel very blessed and grateful for the continued support of all of their family and friends and any additional support is greatly appreciated.
