Jacqueline Freeman & Susan Chernak McElroy know bees; they are the champions of preservation beekeeping in the Pacific Northwest as educators and master beekeepers. Both honeybees and native species are struggling to survive due to habitat loss, overuse of pesticides and immune system problems that have promoted diseases and parasite problems. Together with a larger group of biodynamic and natural beekeepers, they have started the Preservation Beekeeping Club and then Washington State non-profit Council, with practices that promote recognition of the biological, emotional and sacred relationship between humans and bees.
Jacqueline is the author of the trailblazing book “Song of Increase,” published in English and French that promotes living with and building a relationship with bees from an understanding of their nature and wisdom. She is also known from her role as a swarm catcher in the award-winning documentary, “Queen of the Sun.” Jacqueline spends time promoting a gentle approach to pollinators, showing people how to gather and re-home swarms, rescuing downed tree hives, helping friends get started with bees, as well as speaking around the country at conferences, book stores and online at spiritbee.com.
Susan is a teacher, beekeeper, master storyteller, and author of the New York Times Bestseller, “Animals as Teachers and Healers,” published in over 20 languages. In her small backyard apiary, Susan is passionately promoting the ancient practice of skep beekeeping—keeping bees in straw hives. She teaches preservation beekeeping classes, lectures locally, and contributes to the Mother Earth News Blog, “Keeping Backyard Bees."
Education of the public is key to bee survival on this planet, and that includes connecting knowledgeable beekeepers with each other. Attending conferences that will network the preservation beekeepers with educators and practitioners in associations worldwide will go a long way toward bee survival. At this conference, international bee researchers, beekeepers and conservationists will convene to explore human/bee relationships from three fascinating angles: Honeybees in the Wild, Human-Bee interactions, and Landscapes Conservation & Culture. Our campaign is to support this vital and necessary work, with the goal of funding the Preservation Beekeeping Council educators cost in attending the Wild Bees Conference on August 31st through September 2nd, 2018 in Amsterdam, Holland. They will be traveling from Portland, Oregon to their destination, and need support for airfare, conference registration and hotel stays.
The funding for this effort will be:
Round Trip Airline Tickets @ 2000 x 2 = $4000
Conference Registration @350 x 2 = $ 700
Housing @ $150 per night for 3 nights = $450
