Becky Boudreaux - Eagle Syndrome Surgery

Let me introduce you to my dear friend Becky Boudreaux.  She has three teenage boys and a wonderful husband, Nathan (who has been a good friend to my husband, Greg).  Becky’s life motto is “Love God and love people”.  If you’ve ever met her, you will never forget her! 

Over the past eight years Becky has experienced increasing neck and shoulder pain.  During this time, she has seen medical professionals – yet the pain has increased.  Even with severe pain, Becky has continued working as a preschool teacher– she pushes through the pain.   

Finally, just recently, Becky was diagnosed with Eagle Syndrome.  What is Eagle Syndrome?  This is a rare condition that is diagnosed in only 0.16% of the population.  ES is an overgrowth of the Styloid bone, which is a small bone behind the ear.  A styloid bone typically measures about 2.5 cm.  However, Becky’s styloid bone behind her left ear has grown to 5.6 cm.  While these few centimeters may not seem like much, the additional growth pierces, entangles and impinges the nerves in the neck.  This causes episodes of extreme nerve pain, constant aching of the neck and jaw, and other symptoms associated with the nerves in the neck.  It may also put pressure on the carotid artery, increasing the risk of stroke.

The ONLY treatment for ES is surgery.  Since the condition is rare, it is challenging to find a surgeon who has experience and is willing to perform the surgery.  Although out of state, Becky and Nathan have found a qualified surgeon who is willing to perform the surgery!  A surgery has been scheduled.  However, in order to move forward, Becky and Nathan must come up with $8000.

Becky has always been willing and vulnerable to share her life with me as well as taken an interest in mine.
