THE NEED
Needless to say, COVID-19 and the resulting impact has left the entire community of Calhoun- and the world around us- feeling shaken and uncertain. During times like this, we rely on the care and support of our community more than ever.
In recognizing needs across Gordon County, the foodservice industry has noticed that our local healthcare professionals are working unusually long hours and finding it difficult to get nutritious and delicious meals due to modified in-hospital cafeteria services. Additionally, senior citizens around the community are suffering from limited food and isolation.
BECAUSE CALHOUN CARES: THE FOOD CHAIN PROJECT
Because of the mandated restaurant and catering suspensions, which were rightly put in place to protect patrons, the Calhoun foodservice industry is greatly suffering. After brainstorming, several local restaurants have joined forces with an idea that both helps the local foodservice industry survive this trying time—and provides much-needed prepared meals to our healthcare workers and senior citizens. The effort is named The Food Chain Project and is run by the Because Calhoun Cares organization.
COMMUNITY NEED
In the spirit of supporting our community during this challenging time, the project is seeking Community Sponsors and citizen donations to help fund meals for local healthcare professionals and senior citizens. Deliciously prepared meals will be provided by Calhoun Coffee Company, Christian & Jakes Bistro, King Street Market, Simply Southern Restaurant, Thurston’s Café, and Wall Street Catering.
For Business Community Sponsors, we will include your logo on each label of each meal and in all social media marketing efforts based on a minimum $1,500 donation. For a frame of reference, the estimated daily cost to provide meals to our community healthcare workers and seniors is approximately $5,000. Our total fundraising goal is $150,000. While our goal is large, every donation both big and small means so much.

Donations may be mailed to Because Calhoun Cares 212 King Street North Calhoun, GA 30701, submitted via Go Fund Me, or dropped off to any First Bank drive-thru location throughout Calhoun. You may also donate by texting “give” to (844) [phone redacted]. Please make all checks payable to Because Calhoun Cares.
ABOUT THE MEALS
The single-service meals will be labeled according to the Department of Agriculture’s guidelines, with best-by dates. Meals will be prepared for Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner that can be enjoyed cold or microwaved. King Street Market will be overseeing the labeling and delivery of all meals to ensure they meet the necessary health requirements of meals that can be reheated.
