My name is Cara and I am 12 years old. I have had Papillary Thyroid Cancer since I was 8 years old. My Mom and Dad thought it would follow the usual course, and that this would all be behind us, but that has not been the case. My cancer has persisted. After the first surgery to remove my thyroid and lymph nodes, I had to have radiation treatment, and then when it was not effective, I had another radiation treatment. After all of those, we were thrilled to find that two of my scans came back clear. Unfortunately, three years after the first surgery, my scan showed one lymph node was positive for cancer and needed to be removed with surgery. When they did the surgery, they removed 4 extra lymph nodes to test. All lymph nodes removed were positive. This is very rare in a child like me. My Pediatric Endocrinologist had not seen this before (in 30 years of medical practice). Now, because of the rarity, they are not certain as to what the best treatment for me will be. Our doctors have referred us out of state, which Mom says is very expensive. We are hoping to raise enough money for Mom and Dad to travel with me and cover these extra costs.
