My name is Mariam Hassoun, I am a junior at Emory University. I was raised in Huntsville, AL.
In the past two years, I have raised over 11,000 dollars to sponsor orphans in Iraq. The money that was raised this past year (2018) has gone towards supporting sixteen orphans in Baghdad, Iraq. The money is given to the orphan’s caregiver monthly through The Orphan Charity Foundation (مؤسسة اليتيم الخيرية) and goes towards their food, shelter, and education. Orphan Charity Foundation is an NGO with UN consultative status. This monetary assistance will continue to be given until August of 2019.
I have formed a professional relationship with the manager of the orphanage. Having worked with the students there, I knew I wanted to continue to help the organization, formally called Orphan Charity Foundation.
While in Iraq, I worked at the orphanage in Baghdad, Iraq teaching students age 5- 13 English. This was my second time teaching these English classes, the first time being in December 2016. I decided I wanted to invest in something more sustainable. Although I love teaching the kids, I know that they deserve more than just spurts of English classes whenever I can make my way to Iraq. These kids love learning. They are eager to grasp the English language -- and they need to in order to pass their yearly exams. In order to support more consistent progress in English, they need a stable class schedule and teacher. And thus, Baraka English School was born! Starting October 1, orphans receiving assistance from the Foundation in the 6th and 9th grade will start to attend weekly English class on Saturdays.
Of course, this requires a rapid fundraiser for this academic year. I hope to raise 2,400 dollars by October 1 in order to ensure that I can guarantee the students this opportunity for at least a year. Please consider generously donating to this cause.
