Ban Gillnets Belize Campaign (Launched July 9, 19)

August 5, 2019 - The Coalition for Sustainable Fisheries has received a $75,000 matching grant and all donations to the Coalition between July 31, 2019 and December 31, 2019 will be matched with an equal donation effectively doubling all donations and providing $150,000 (USD) to support a country-wide gillnet ban. The generous donors are long-time advocates for Belize's marine environment who wish to remain anonymous.

July 12, 2019 – The Coalition for Sustainable Fisheries received a $250,000 (USD) donation secured through Yellow Dog Community & Conservation Foundation for transitioning gillnet fishermen to  sustainable alternative livelihoods.

Gillnets are rapidly destroying Belize's marine environment and with it the country's economy.  Several individuals and conservation organizations have been advocating for a gillnet ban for more than a decade and it now appears to be possible.

The Coalition for Sustainable Fisheries, a group of conservation organizations, commercial fishing organizations, resort owners, outfitters and guides, was formed with a simple goal: to ban the use of gillnets in all Belizean waters.  Most of the heavy lifting has been done and the Belizean government now appears to be ready to legislate a ban.

A formal proposal has been submitted to the Government of Belize which commits the Coalition to raising significant funds for transitioning gillnet fishermen to other sustainable alternative livelihoods and we ask you to help in raising these essential funds.  All donations are greatly appreciated.

Minus credit card fees, all funds go directly to the Coalition for Sustainable Fisheries through the help of Turneffe Atoll Trust.  Turneffe Atoll Trust is a founding member of the Coalition and a recognized 501(c)(3) organization making all donations tax deductible.
