Bamber Gascoigne Memorial Fund

Bamber Gascoigne, who died on 8th February 2022, was an historian and playwright and the celebrated quizmaster of University Challenge. He was a generous patron of many local organisations, including the Richmond Society and the Museum of Richmond. Less well known was his love of the River Thames and traditional boating and his tireless support of organisations giving opportunities to young people to learn to row.

As a memorial to Bamber, we plan to upgrade 'Bamber's Steps', the spot on Cholmondeley Walk where he used daily to swim in the river, to provide a mooring for rowing boats and safe gravelled access to the water, together with wetland planting. It will be a place for both contemplation and activity close to his home and the community he loved.
The work will be carried out by Mark Edwards and his team from Bridge Boathouses. His sketch is below.

We estimate that the cost will be £5000. If any surplus remains after the works are complete, it will be donated to the charity Skerries for Schools, of which Bamber was Patron. www.skerries4schools.org
