Las Vegas Middle Schoolers go to DC

Engaging in government can be an incredibly enriching experience for students. A trip across the country can truly change a kid’s life. As educators, we feel a deep passion and responsibility to pass on these opportunities to the next generation of leaders. Our middle school in Las Vegas, Nevada has one of the most vibrant and diverse student bodies of any school in the valley.
We work in a Title I Tier I school where a vast majority of our students receive free and reduced lunch. For some of our students, this will be a once in a lifetime opportunity to leave Las Vegas and see another part of our country. We would love for our students to have this experience, however, the financial constraints may, unfortunately, limit student participation. While we are requesting that students contribute what they can financially, we don’t want the burden to fall on the hardworking families of our students. Nothing should have to prevent our deserving students from participating in this extremely valuable trip.
Our goal is to raise enough money to fully cover the cost for 15 students to attend. The cost per student for our inaugural Washington DC trip is approximately $1500. This cost will cover flights, transportation, room and board, meals, valuable civic engagement educational activities. Our trip will be hosted by Close Up DC whose mission is to provide "...a one-of-a-kind opportunity for students to experience their government in action. From visits to Washington’s famous monuments, memorials, and institutions, to meetings with their Congressional delegation on Capitol Hill, Close Up students get a first-hand look at the American political system and consider what role they, as students, play in our democracy."
