Bail & Legal Defense for Rural NC Trans Inmate

"Jinx" has been in jail for nearly a month without bail after being harassed and targeted for her gender identity. She had a stable home and job until coworkers found out she had begun HRT. Her employer & landlord told her he objected to her "lifestyle and sexuality," then fired her and then staged a verbal altercation while she was coming home so he could call the police. Shortly after the arrest, eviction papers were filed in court, claiming she deserves to be homeless and unemployed simply because she was arrested.
Trans inmates in North Carolina detention centers can be kept in solitary confinement indefinitely for non-disciplinary reasons, deprived of the basic social and recreational privileges other pre-trial inmates enjoy. She has been in non-disciplinary segregation for nearly a month, while the collateral consequences outside continue to mount. The impact this has on physical and mental health alone is horrific - but she's also being deprived of meaningful access to legal counsel and faced with the prospect of eviction proceedings while she's in jail.
She's only being held for resisting arrest, but part of that was charged in a way designed to prevent her from posting bail. Despite that she was found indigent and appointed a public defender, the court added $10,000 to her secured bond at a bail hearing where she didn't have a lawyer. No one in the small, very conservative town this is happening in will step in and we urgently need support to bail her out and hire a civil rights attorney.
