Backing our Brave Shara

Donation protected
It's been nearly 2 years since Shara first received her pancreatic cancer diagnosis in December 2018.

In true Shara style though, she has fought harder and longer, and is part of the just 25% of patients that survive longer than a year. (Just 5% of patients survive longer than 5 years).

After a gruelling 6 months of chemo post her operation which involved removing her pancreas, gall bladder and part of her stomach - Shara was cancer free for a few short months before learning it had returned in her lungs and at her wound site.

2020 has brought challenges for us all but none more so than for Shara who has found herself high up on the shielding list being diabetic -from the loss of her pancreas  -and with the added risk factor of having cancer in her lungs.

Another round of chemo has followed this year but sadly it was delayed due to covid and then had to stop early due to more cancer being discovered in her kidneys.

*****************

Sadly, the NHS have said they won't fund another round of chemo for Shara despite a second opinion by a private oncologist saying that she should have been on a different chemo drug called Abraxane  during the last round of chemo that could  have given her back at least a few of the precious months with family and friends that have been stolen from her this year.

With Covid numbers being much lower in South Africa as they enter their summer season - Shara has booked a flight to South Africa in early November to spend some time with her sister, little nieces and family and friends and to start the 6 month course of Abraxane while she is there.

The cost of having the chemo in South Africa is c£30 000 including scans and consultant appointments. ( Its £3300 per month for the chemo alone!)  The same course will cost nearly double to have it done privately in the UK.

**************
We are hoping to raise some money for Shara to help with the cost of the chemo course in South Africa and to have the best palliative care she can if she stays in South Africa if the covid situation shows no sign of improving in the UK as we head into the winter months.

It's been an incredibly tough year for everyone and we truly appreciate any support you could give us with this campaign to help Shara.
