Baby Zaika

Little Zack, aka Zaika, was dual diagnosed at 8 months, with Gaucher's disease and LCH. Doctors discovered the LCH to be a tumor in his lung and was treated with a year of chemo.  As the chemo treatments are over and the tumor is now only being monitored, the non curable Gaucher's is a life long battle.  Gaucher's disease is an inherited disorder that affects many of the body's organs and tissues; although treatable, Gaucher's is not curable. The medicine for this rare condition, given every two weeks via infusion, costs over $1,500 a vial. Due to the rarity of Zaika's type of gaucher's, he requires 2 vials every week, $12,000 per month. Luckily the insurance covers most of the infusion expenses as well as most of the would-be crippling costs associated with someone who is chronically ill. But even though we are blessed with amazing coverage, it still doesn't include the co-pays and deductibles associated with other medical expenses, such as doctor visits, medications, medical supplies, procedures and tests, and any unexpected expenses, such as ambulance rides, additional home care, etc.
