Baby Riley's Medical Fund

Donation protected
Taryn and Sara wanted to be parents but knew the difficulties they would face given Sara’s medical history. The couple started dating at 15 years old and when Sara was only 18, they found out if they ever wanted a family in-vitro fertilization would be their only option.  After years of planning and saving to make this possible, Sara was finally, and happily, pregnant.

However, they soon came to realize it was a very difficult pregnancy with Sara facing health concerns of her own as well as sadly finding out their baby was soon going to face her own health issues. At 20 weeks gestation they found out their baby girl was missing a kidney and had a hole in her heart. At 34 weeks, Sara was hospitalized due to being diagnosed with preeclampsia - a dangerous high blood pressure health issue. At just 35 weeks Sara was induced and their baby was born prematurely. Welcome baby Riley!

When Taryn and Sara decided to do IVF to conceive their precious little girl, they understood the financial burden they would take on and were prepared to do so. What they didn’t plan for were the weeks before and after Riley was born.

Sara was hospitalized for a week pre delivery as her preeclampsia got worse and had to stay a week post delivery due to the risks of a stroke and/or seizure due to her health issues. They were only home as a family just shy of two weeks before baby Riley was rushed by ambulance to the hospital because she was not holding her oxygen. After a week of being in the hospital Riley was sent home with medication to support her brain. Due to being a preemie, her brain was not working properly to tell her lungs to breath. She had gotten bronchiolitis (a form of RSV) that had set her back in development, affecting her brain.

On top of this stress Riley saw her nephrologist (kidney doctor) a few days after being released from the hospital and they realized there are many more doctors,  appointments, and health concerns ahead. She will soon see her cardiologist and a genetic specialist to follow up with the hole in her heart and other health issues.

Between Sara being out of work due to hospitalization, both girls being hospitalized after delivery, weekly doctors appointments, tests, and scans, the bills are starting to pile up. This is just the beginning as many more are to follow in coming years of Riley’s life. This is supposed to be one of the happiest times of their lives,  yet it has become one of the most stressful.

Thank you for taking the time to read their story! Anything and everything contributed is appreciated by the Kirby family.
