Karl and Paula Lowe just welcomed a beautiful baby boy into the world - world, meet Logan!

While every baby is a miracle - Logan is going to be an even bigger miracle! Logan has been diagnosed with several complications - Moebius Syndrome, Dextrocardia, Craniosynostosis/Miotopic Ridge, Mixed Apnea and an allergy to casein (the protein found in cows milk)... with NICU stays and procedures - medical costs are definitely rising... With Karl and Paula keeping Roots running like a well oiled machine and driving back and forth to Memphis - life can get crazy (and I'm sure overwhelming). But even now - walking into Roots, if you see Karl or Paula, they still have smiles on their faces and they are still making sure that everyone who enters has an amazing experience...

These funds for Logan will be used to help alleviate any medical costs and travel costs that they incur going back and forth between Jonesboro and Memphis... Please help if you can - every dollar counts! Let's band together as a community to help a staple in our community! #RootsforRoots


Definitions to conditions: 

Moebius Syndrome 
Moebius syndrome is a rare neurological disorder characterized by weakness or paralysis (palsy) of multiple cranial nerves, most often the 6th (abducens) and 7th (facial) nerves. Other cranial nerves are sometimes affected. The disorder is present at birth (congenital). One of every 50 000  - 500 000 babies in the US are born with  Moebius. Also 30 - 40 percent of children with Moebius have a certain level of autism, we will be able to know about this when he is older.
Symptoms 

•Weakness or complete paralysis of the facial muscles.

•Trouble swallowing or sucking

•Difficulties with speech and frequent drooling.

•Inability to form facial expressions, including smiling, frowning, raising eyebrows, puckering lips or closing eyes

•No able to move eyes left to right 

•Absence of left pectoral (Poland Syndrome) 

Thankfully he has been able to smile from one side and he is able to blink and close his eyes. But everything above has been present so far.  He has a g- tube since he is not able to swallow 


Dextrocardia 
His heart is located in the right side  thankfully is working good. This affects less than 1 percent of the general population 

Craniosynostosis/Miotopic Ridge

Is a condition in which one or more of the sutures close too early, causing problems with normal brain and skull growth. Premature closure of the sutures may also cause the pressure inside of the head to increase and the skull or facial bones to change from a normal, symmetrical appearance. Doctors said is more than certain he will have surgery later on this year 

Mixed Apnea
He has obstructive apnea more than central apnea (central apnea basically is that the brain doesn’t send a message to the lungs to breathe) He has more  obstructive apnea than central apnea since his larynx is very narrow. He stops breathing 100 times every hour. They have extended (balloon)  his larynx so it doesn’t collapse when he sleeps. 

This procedure has to done two more times, the issue is the intubation and extubation. He is in a bubble Cpap right now and they are trying bring it down to a breathing canula. The chances of tracheotomy are still high since his airway is difficult to work specially with extubation.

Allergy to casein (protein found in cows milk) 
For this reason he was not able to be fed with breast milk. Children with Moebius have issues  gaining weight and all fortifications use with breast milk cause an allergic reaction. My milk supply was not enough to sustain his feedings, not even to try cut dairy of my diet and try to give him breast milk again. His belly could take any formula either. He had to go through a few types of formula that did not cause him to have bloody stools. With all that going on the doctors decided to give him hypoallergenic formula Alfamino
