Baby Gabriel's SMA Medical Fund

Donation protected
Gabriel Martinez aka Baby Gabey, was recently diagnosed with a genetic condition called SMA-type 2. Frank and Jenna's lives have been turned upside down as they are now shuffling through countless doctor’s appointments, therapy, various testing and just trying to cope with the fact that their baby boy will not live a “normal” life. With this condition he has normal intellectual and emotional development, can sit up and roll, but he will likely never stand or walk. He can also be severely affected by respiratory issues and aspiration pneumonia. He has trouble swallowing, aspirates very easily and is at risk of needing a feeding tube. Fortunately there is a new medication to help slow the progression of this degenerative disease called Spinraza, but the treatments cost around $125,000 each and he will need multiple. Insurance will hopefully cover much of the cost of medical care and treatment but there is so much more associated that they will need to provide for Gabriel like wheelchairs and making their home accessible for a disabled child. Jenna and Frank would never ask for help, so I am asking on their behalf. In the midst of all they are worried about, I would love to lessen their financial burden.

What is SMA?
SMA stands from Spinal Muscular Atrophy. SMA is a genetic condition that robs people of the ability to move and breathe. ...How does someone get SMA?
SMA is inherited. 1 in 50 people are unknowingly carriers of the condition and when 2 people are carriers have a baby, there is a 25% chance their child will be affected with SMA. Recent statistics show 1 in 11,000 babies are born with SMA.
It is the #1 genetic killer of babies under 2 years old (for SMA Type 1).

Can SMA be cured?
As of today SMA CANNOT be cured, but as of just a couple years ago it can be treated and the progression can be slowed with a newly FDA approved drug called Spinraza. As great as this sounds, many insurance carriers still deny treatment with Spinraza.
