When my husband and I found out we were expecting a little bundle of joy we were ecstatic!. At a 4 month check up we found out our baby Michael had a congenital heart defect (through a routine scheduled ultrasound) Tretrology of Fallot (teh-tral-uh-je ov fuh-LOE).TOF is a rare condition caused by a combination of four heart defects that are present at birth. These defects, which affect the structure of the heart, cause oxygen-poor blood to flow out of the heart and into the rest of the body. After several Doctor appointments and ultrasounds our Doctor highly recommended further testing to rule out any source of the heart defect. Unfortunately, testing came back positive,we were devastated. Our baby boy had been diagnosed with Digeorge syndrome. Never hearing of this medical term before, we did our research...
DiGeorge syndrome (also known as 22q11 deletion, velo cardio facial syndrome VCFS) is a disorder caused by a defect in chromosome 22, it results in the poor development of several body systems. MedicaI problems commonly associated with DiGeorge syndrome include heart defects, poor immune system function, a cleft palate, complications related to low levels of calcium in the blood and behavioral disorders.
The number and severity of problems associated with DiGeorge syndrome vary greatly. Almost everyone with DiGeorge syndrome needs treatment from specialists in a variety of fields.
With the proper treatment of heart defects, immune system disorders, and other health problems, the vast majority of children with a 22q11 deletion will survive and grow into adulthood. Children with Digeorge syndrome will generally need extra help throughout school and will need long term care .With Baby Mikeys costly routine appointments with several specialists, and his open heart surgery fast approaching this September, we simply ask for your love, prayers and support .Any donations are welcomed and VERY much appreciated and will go towards hospital bills, hospital stays, co-payments, medications, etc. As it can all be financially overwhelming.
Baby Mikey has been such a huge blessing in our lives, and to see him thrive with each heartbeat brings us overwhelming joy and happiness. We truly are blessed. We look foward to sharing with you baby mikeys journey.
Thank you and God Bless heart family!
