Send Tuck to Surfer's Healing for Autism

Donation protected
My son Tucker was diagnosed with Classic Nonverbal Autism in the Fall of 2011 at roughly  2 1/2 years old. At the time of his diagnosis we were devastated not knowing what kind of journey laid ahead of us. Tucker is now 5 1/2 years old and has made great progress through help from Early Intervention Programs, Specialized Therapies, and organizations such as Autism Speaks.

Last summer I came across an article about the organization Surfer's Healing. It is a specialized camp for children with disabilities, but geared more for children with Autism. I watched the video that I came across on Yahoo.com and cried my eyes out (I will include a link to this video article for those who do not know about Surfer's Healing, so they can see for themselves what it is all about). The organization gives families a day where they can forget their diagnosis and allow children with special needs to have fun and seek calm through the waves by surfing with professional surfers. Families can sign up for specific camps that they have when they open for enrollment. There are a limited amount of spots and those who do not get a spot are then put on a waiting list.

On Easter Sunday this year, I tried to get Tucker into one of their California camps, since that is the closest to Oregon they get. With the sign ups having only been open for 30 minutes, I thought we were sure to get in, but sadly we were wait listed. I figured we would not be hearing from them and forgot all about it. Today, July 1, 2014, I recieved an email from Surfer's Healing saying we got into the surf camp on July 23, 2014 at Pacific Beach in San Diego, California. Although the camp itself is free, I have to provide transportation, food, and lodging costs. Thinking we wouldn't get in, I did not save any money for this trip.  I now have less than three weeks to try and come up with the money for Tucker to be able to attend. While I have some money that can help pay for this trip I do not nearly have enough to make this trip a reality at this moment. We figured between either airfare, hotel, rental car, food, and unforseen circumstances or gas, hotel, food, and unforseen circumstances (since we haven't decided if flying or driving would be more beneficial), the trip would roughly cost $5,000. Whatever money is left over, I will donate to Surfer's Healing, so they can continue to be able to provide these camps to others.

This would be a great opportunity for Tucker, if you know Tucker at all, you know the crashing waves of the ocean, or the tranquility of any type of water soothes him and makes him happy. It also gives us an opportunity to bond with other families who know what we go through and probably most importantly it allows us to do something like a normal functioning family might be able to do, and allows us for one day to not think about his disability. I thank you all in advance for your time, if you can donate thank you, if you cannot afford to donate please share this information. I will forever be in your debt for helping me be able to provide this opportunity for my son! Thank you!
