Nani's Medical Expenses and Recovery
Aloha Family and Friends of Nani and Jason Jeremiah,
Born and raised in Waianae Hawaii, and a graduate of Waianae High Schools Class of 1980, Charlotte Iwalani "Nani" (Kaahaaina) Jeremiah is the beautiful wife of Jason Jeremiah, and daughter of Samuel and Elsie Kaahaaina. Nani is also an amazing mother of five beautiful children; Jered "Kaleo" (Ewalina), Jasmine, Cherahn, Joshua, and Jillion Jeremiah. Joshua has recently graduated from Waianae High School and will start his first year of college in the fall, while Jillion will soon be entering the 8th grade. Nani also has five precious grandchildren ages 1-11.
Nani and Jason has been an integral part in reaching out to families along the Leeward Coast of Oahu through Ark of Safety Christian Fellowship, where Nani's brother-in-law and sister are the Senior Pastors of the church. Nani is the bible bookstore manager for Ark of Safety Bible Bookstore and Jason also serves as a Deacon.
The past year and a half has been a tough and difficult year for Nani and her family. Last January, Nani was diagnosed with Stage 4 Colon Cancer and underwent several treatments of Radiation and Chemotherapy. For the past several months she underwent many other treatments while also living with a colostomy bag.
Unfortunately, last week Nani contracted a nearly fatal bacterial infection known as necrotizing fasciitis; a flesh eating bacteria that claims the lives of 1 of every 4 people that it plagues. Nani was immediately rushed to the Pali Momi Hospital in Honolulu, Hawaii where she underwent a total of 3 major surgeries within 72 hours, due to the rapid spread of the infection, resulting in multiple wound vacs. Unknowingly, while fighting for her life and being intubated, Nani also suffered from a moderate stroke to her left frontal lobe of her brain, which affects her ability to walk and use her executive memory. Due to the severity of the infection, Nani is on numerous antibiotics, pain medications, and dialysis treatments.
The recovery process for Nani is deemed to be a long, intensive, enduring process. Nani will eventually require many demanding hours of rehabilitation at a rehab facility, besides still undergoing treatments from her previous hospitalization in 2013 and colostomy procedure. Her dialysis treatment prognosis is unknown. The residual effects of the stroke, bacteria infection, and wound vac healing process are undetermined at the moment; yet we remain hopeful that Nani will fully recover, despite the many challenges she continues to face each day. We hope to take Nani home soon, but her home also requires that it be handicap accessible in order for this to take place, besides the much needed equipment and services that she will now require for recovery.
