Ayden’s Battle Against Leukemia

After experiencing numbness in his legs and a fall at school Ayden (15) was rushed to Cape Fear Valley Health Pavilion-Hoke in Raeford, North Carolina. Preliminary test showed low platelet counts and high lactate dehydrogenase levels which was concerning enough for him to be flown to Duke University Hospital.  
As any mother would do, Vanessa dropped everything to be by Ayden’s side as doctors narrowed done the possible diagnosis. Her youngest son Andrew (5) had been scooped up by a friend so Vanessa could focus on Ayden. 

An MRI at Duke showed lesions on his spine. After hours of waiting, a bone marrow biopsy and many tests,  the answer was back and it was every parent’s worst nightmare;  B-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.
The plan is for Ayden to remain at Duke and begin a month of intense chemotherapy which started last night.  After 30 days, he gets a week off before beginning 2 months of combination chemo, followed by 2-3 years of daily oral chemo and once monthly IV chemo. The good news is that there is an 85% survival rate and Ayden is taking an extremely positive stance! 

Vanessa (my cousin) is a single mom. This Go Fund Me will allow her to focus on supporting Ayden and Andrew at a time when they need her most. She has taken a LOA from work, not to mention traveling 2 hours from home to Duke on a regular basis.
