First Production by ayanadancearts

ayanadancearts is presenting its first official project, joined by Toyoki Yonesaka Dye Studio, titled "Expression in Constraint: Movement and Color" from Aug 30 to Sept 3, at San Francisco State University.  It comprises three dance pieces I choreographed and produced in the last 5 years, “集い/Tsudoi” (2013), “鬼女/ Kijo” (2015), and “(黄)おく/ Kioku” (2017), and an exhibition of Toyoki Yonesaka’s katazome (stencil-dyed) textile works.

This project, over a year long in the planning, celebrates many significant milestones. It is a dream-come-true collaboration with my father, the artist I’ve always most admired, in his U.S. debut. It is also a proud moment for me to return as an alumni to the university that equipped me with the necessary tools to become a professional dancer. Finally, It is the debut of ayanadancearts, an entity and mission in life I’ve finally able to establish after 4 years of schooling and 5 years of choreographing.

San Francisco State University has been extremely generous in providing rehearsal space, gallery space, and performance space, allowing me to direct my budget mainly towards covering artist fees. Since 2013, I’ve been working with the same dedicated dancers and composer, and together we have been developing and deepening my works. The money raised through GoFundMe will allow me to compensate them for the countless hours they have dedicated to this project. If the donations exceed the goal, they will help cover other production fees such as printing and costumes.

Thank you all for believing in the value of my work, helping me get to this point, and supporting this significant moment in my career. Every gift, of any size, counts---your donation will allow each artist involved in this project to thrive. If San Francisco is accessible to you, please consider coming and experiencing this culturally-nuanced, one-of-a-kind performance.
