My family unfortunately suffered a tragedy on the October 27th of this year . Everything started a few years ago when my younger brother began to suffer from mental illness. Since then my mother Raquel Penagos did everything possible to understand this illness and get the help they needed. As a mother full of love she also gave her own life. Last Tuesday when my brother had a very bad episode he attacked my mother with a knife, my sister Saray tried to help her and got injured as well; but my mother did not make it and passed away. My sister was hospitalized with a stab wounds and perforated lung, but thankfully she survived the attack and is recovering.
At this moment, my sisters and I are going through this difficult situation and facing very hard decisions to make. Starting with the costs associated with my mom's funeral , and taking her ashes to Colombia so she can rest in peace in her town next to my father who passed from cancer a year ago. My sister is recovering not only physically, but also mentally since she went through this devastating event and my brother is facing some very serious criminal charges.
As my mother's last wish, for all the sacrifice she made -we want to make sure my brother receives the proper sentence and treatment for mental illness . My mother fought alone all these years trying to get answers and help, we would like to leave a strong and impactful message to all the families that are suffering from mental illness to get the right help in order to avoid a nightmare such as this.
My hope is that my brother's case can help reform laws and policies in place to avoid a tragedy such as this from happening again. Providing the right support and follow up not only to the person affected by this illness but also to the family is important and should be easily available.
The funds collected will help to cover my mom's funeral, my sister's medical expenses and therapy, and any legal fees associated with my brother's case. Mi familia lamentablemente sufrió una tragedia el 27 de octubre de este año. Todo comenzó hace unos años cuando mi hermano menor comenzó a sufrir de enfermedades mentales. Desde entonces mi mama Raquel Penagos hizo todo lo que estaba en sus manos para entender esta enfermedad y obtener la ayuda que necesitaban, Como una mamá llena de amor y una heroina, también dio su propia vida por el. El miércoles pasado, cuando mi hermano tuvo un episodio muy grave, ataco a mi mamá con un cuchillo, mi hermana Saray trató de ayudarla y también salio herida. Mi mama fallecio. Mi hermana fue hospitalizada con una puñalada en el pecho que perforo su pulmon, pero afortunadamente se está recuperando.
Ahora mis hermanas y yo estamos pasando por esta difícil situación. Comenzando con el costo del funeral de mi mamá y también poder llevar sus cenizas a Colombia para descansar en paz junto a mi papá. Mi hermana se está recuperando no sólo físicamente, sino también mentalmente de esta tragedia y mi hermano está en el proceso de ser sentenciado.
Como último deseo de mi mamá y por todo el sacrificio que hizo, queremos asegurarnos de que mi hermano reciba la sentencia y el tratamiento correcto, ya que MI mamá luchó todos estos años tratando de obtener una respuesta y ayuda y dejar un mensaje fuerte a todas las familias que tienen un miembro que sufre de esta enfermedad para tener la ayuda correcta y asegurarse de no llegar a este punto.
