Avalon's Journey to Mobility

Donation protected
Avalon's incredible journey begins on April 4, 2011.  This was the day we almost lost our 5 month old baby girl.  God had mercy on our family and let us keep our precious little girl.  Eternally grateful for the miracle we were given, we had no idea of the intense and incredibly challenging journey we faced ahead.

Avalon is now a 3 year old, very motivated, strong willed little girl with Cerebral Palsy.   She is thriving and making incredible gains daily.  A year ago she wasn’t moving at all.  Now she is able to crawl, walk with a walker and play for hours with her 5 year old sister and friends.   We are so grateful to all of her doctors and therapists who have worked so hard to help us get her to where she is now.  Because of the brain trauma she experienced as a baby, the pathways that send messages between her brain and the rest of her body were injured and some died.  We have been working endlessly to help Avalon rebuild these pathways.  Reciprocal motion, such as the motion of the legs when riding a bike or walking, helps to do this.

Avalon's dream is to ride a bike with her older sister and her friends.  We have tried regular tricycles but none fit Avalon's needs.  She slides off, is not able to keep her feet on the pedals or is not able to hold her core weight enough to actually pedal.   We began to think riding a bike wouldn't be a reality for a very long time, if at all.  That was until we were introduced to an incredible organization called Imua Kakou Trykes, a subsidiary of Ambucs.  https://www.facebook.com/pages/Imua-K%C4%81kou-Chapter-Ambucs/364342270357590
A group of physical therapists joined forces to form a non-profit organization who gives AmTrykes (custom made tricycles for children with special needs) to children who need them but can't afford them.  Not only is Amtryke a tricycle that is designed for therapeutic use, it's also a tricycle that our children with special needs can ride themselves.  For many children with special needs, it's the first time they have been able to experience true independence.

After taking Avalon to ride an AmTryke  and seeing the pure joy on her face (and all of the other children's faces), a fire ignited in me to not only help Avalon get "her new bike" (as she calls it) but to also help other children receive one of their own.  Imua Kakou Trykes needs to raise funds to help make this holiday season a very special one for our kids.  These trykes are very expensive, over $1,000 each.   Please help me make Avalon's dreams come true with an AmTryke of her very own.  It's crucial we keep her moving as much as possible and a tricycle that she can ride for fun will do nothing but help her build strength, pathways from her brain to the rest of her body and a very independent, confident little girl.  Please help me make this happen for Avalon.  Every dollar counts.  I know funds are tight for a lot of us, but even $5 will help.   Please spread the word.  We are forever grateful.
