ASU CanSat 2018 - Testing & Travel

We are the CanSat Competition Teams here at Arizona State University.
· What is CanSat?
o The CanSat competition is an international design-build-launch competition for space-related topics at the collegiate level. The American Astronautical Society provides a mission objective and Universities compete, going through the entire engineering process, to develop the best device to complete said objective. The objective for 2018 is to design a capsule that can fit inside a rocket, be launched, deploy, and descend back to earth measuring atmospheric data and taking video, all while protecting a chicken egg inside.
· Previous CanSat teams up to now
o ASU has sent a team to compete in CanSat for over four years now. Each team has been building a strong foundation for following years to succeed at higher and higher levels. This previous year, ASU was the top US University and placed 3rd overall out of over 70 teams that applied.
o This year we have finally been able to have two CanSat teams apply to compete. Out of the 99 teams from across the world that applied and presented their Preliminary Design Report, both ASU teams placed in the overall top 40 teams and qualified for the final launch in Texas this June.
· Why crowdfunding?
o Our teams are sponsored by the Sun Devil Satellite Lab which is a Fulton Student Organization. With that though, comes certain limitations for funding, and what things can be purchased with those monies. All of our team members are full-time students and when certain expenses come up for test launches or travel, we have to pay for them out of pocket. With two CanSat teams this year, testing and travel costs increase a lot and make it difficult for us. This is why we turn to you to help us be able to reach these goals.
· What are we going to do with the money?
o The first goal we have two test launches for each of our teams
§ This involves purchasing rocket motors, or fuel, for each test launch, hazmat shipping for each rocket motor order, and the gas to go out to the designated launch sites a couple hours away from campus.
o Our second goal is to cover some or all of the costs related to travel and lodging for the competition itself in Texas.
§ This ranges from hotel rentals, car rentals, and gas.
§ Since the competition is from June 8-10th, the earlier we can make our reservations, the lower the costs it will be in the end for us.
o Our final goal is to get team polos for both teams
§ Having a team polo gives our team a great identity when we go to the competition itself and are representing the state of Arizona on this world stage.
· Some rewards for donating
o We will offer a few reward tiers for donating! These range from personalized thank you notes, small models of either or both teams capsules, up to larger rewards such as listing your name or your company name on our team polos.
· End game
o If we’re able to get funding for our test launches, then we are going to be able to test out our prototypes to the full extent before we compete. These tests provide tons of great data and learning experiences for us
o Funding for our trips greatly eases the burden of travel costs and provides us, as students, a great opportunity to interact with other great people from across the world, represent Arizona on that stage, and have those great experiences
o Without your contributions, we have to resort to paying for these things from our own pockets or we have to limit the number of students that will be able to travel.
