Hello, my name is Cindi Land and I am a friend of Ashley Shaw's. If you are unfamiliar with Ashley's story, Ashley is a married 33 year old mother of three who resides in Newark, Ohio. Over five years ago Ashley was diagnosed with Chiari Malformation. In addition to her original diagnosis, Ashley has also been diagnosed with a number of other rare disorders resulting in over 74 surgeries in five years. While these surgeries were medically necessary they were not always without consequences with some surgeries resulting in lasting and/or life altering complications that not only hindered her ability to work and provide financial assistance to her family, but have provided challenges on a more personal level as well. Most recently, Ashley has struggled with a rare complication where she has been unable to hold up her head for more than a few minutes without becoming physically ill and has had to resume mega doses of steroids that resulted in uncontrolled steroid induced diabetes.
At the beginning of Ashley’s journey she was able to see specialists in Ohio but when her health became too complex her care was transferred to a neurosurgeon in Maryland; eight hours from home. Because of the distance and her physical limitations, each trip requires a friend or family member to drive and remain with her for all visits, procedures and surgeries. These trips, while life saving to Ashley are not without financial hardship to her family. In addition to her already mounting out of pocket medical expenses, these trips also result in a number of uncovered expenses such as the cost of travel, food, and lodging as she is required to remain in Maryland versus returning home so she can be closely monitored by her surgeon for potential post-op complications.
Myself, along with other friends are working together to raise money to help Ashley and her family offset these ongoing and mounting expenditures. So as you read her story I am asking all who read to prayerfully consider a financial donation, share her story and encourage others to share as well.
