Asher's Eyecare & Rehabilitation Expenses

On Easter Sunday April 4th, my son Asher suffered a serious injury to his right eye--a "corneal laceration"--which resulted in an immediate loss of vision and emergency surgery at Harborview Hospital in Seattle.  On May 5th, Asher had his second surgery at Seattle Children's Hospital (SCH), and he will require at least two more surgeries spanning the next several months. Since the injury, Asher has been virtually blind--due to the trauma sustained to his right eye, he can only open his his left eye for short periods of time.

For the past three years, Asher has been an active volunteer of the Washington Explorer Search & Rescue (WESAR) -Kitsap County Unit. In 2019, Asher was awarded the Jim Gideon Youth Volunteer of the Year Award. Asher is an avid rock-climber and mountaineer, and for the past two years, has been a member of the Tacoma Mountaineers Adventure Club (TAC-MAC).

Asher (and his twin sister, Camilla) is a senior at Kingston High School this year. He has a tough road ahead of him and there are many unknowns.  It is indeterminate if Asher will regain his sight in his right eye. For those who know Asher, all would agree that he possesses an indomitable spirit and an incredible PMA. Asher is receiving the very best care from a team of ophthalmologic surgeons a SCH and the Eye Institute at Harborview. However, there are many expenses that are not covered by insurance.  Since Asher's injury, he has required full-time care, so I've taken a family medical leave for the remainder of the school year. I'm a Special Education Teacher at Insight School of Washington.
