Who We Are:
We are Asante Africa Foundation. We empower East Africa’s youth to confidently address life’s challenges, thrive in the global economy, and catalyze positive change. We are a locally led, globally guided implementing organization working in Kenya and Tanzania with recognized expertise in developing educated, resilient youth who will go on to thrive in the workforce and within their communities. We focus on improving the educational, life skills and livelihood outcomes of girls and boys in school and work within the established education system.
Our mission is to educate and empower the next generation of change agents, whose dreams and actions transform the future for Africa and the world.
What We Do:
Rooted in the UN Sustainable Development Goals, we achieve results through a set of interconnected programs designed to foster the development of educated, resilient girls and young women capable of managing obstacles and opportunities as they arise. We focus exclusively on rural communities where there are limited resources and where problems of access and transportation make the girls extremely hard-to-reach.
Our activities are structured around three key focus areas:
1. Keeping at-risk adolescent girls on the path to learning through social, reproductive health, and financial literacy education, application of knowledge, and close mentoring.
2. Fostering the development of personal leadership, job readiness, and entrepreneurship skills for teen aged youth through extracurricular, collaborative, hands-on activities as well as active community engagement.
3. Accelerating academic learning and linking knowledge to life application in the classrooms through hands-on teacher training, low-cost local resources, and with digital tools.
Adolescent Girls’ Advancement Program:
This project will bring our successful Adolescent Girls’ Advancement Program to 5 communities off-the-paved road.
Your contribution will be used to reach over 460 girls in rural Tanzania over a 2-year period. We have chosen the Tanga region, Tanzania based on the high rates of child marriage, early pregnancy and gender-based violence, as well as low rate of girls who transition to secondary school to help keep them in school.
We will focus on two groups of girls over a two year period: in-school adolescent girls at high risk of dropping out and out-of-school adolescent girls who have gotten pregnant or married and still want to learn.
Our unique approach to active boy inclusion engages boys by sensitizing them to specific challenges girls face during puberty, providing skills to become strong allies and advocates for their sisters. We also actively include mothers, teachers and friends.
With the knowledge the gain in the program, girls reinvest in their communities by teaching their parents, siblings and friends at home what they have learned. This knowledge sharing aspect creates a ripple effect of change that travels through households, villages, counties and beyond.
How the Gifts Will be Used:
Our goal is to raise a total of $47,000 over two years.
$5,000 (8 groups of girls in 5 communities)
Launches 1 new school-based safe space club for Girl-led programming includes digital tools with curriculum and training in health and hygiene, personal rights, access to health services, financial budgeting and savings; Participation for middle-school aged girls (both in-school and out of school).
$100 per girl
Helps a young girl and her mother start a small business in her local community using the skills she learned in the Girls Program. Types of businesses girls usually can start are; providing fresh vegetables to older people, showing movies at the school on Friday nights to the community, growing and selling tree seedlings, and growing bee hives and selling honey.
$40 per girl
Provides a uniform, sweater, underwear and shoes so a girl can go to school.
