Arts in Medicine

This past year  I had the opportunity to volunteer at a hospital through a student program. It was an amazing experience that really gave me insight to the wonders of the medical world; however, my time there opened my eyes to a consistent issue that continued to nag me in the back of my mind. While the patients were cared for greatly, many in critical condition seemed as if they had no regard for life and had completely lost hope. This became even more apparent after I spoke with a cancer patient who described how the stress of her situation had caused her to loose passion for her talent in art. Her story really touched me because I am also an artist and I was reminded how grateful I am to be in a situation where I can practice my passion freely.

As the year continued and the program ended, I was still not able to shake the world-weary feeling I had seen in so many patients' eyes, so I became determined to take action against this problem. Through a personal project, I decided to communicate with younger patients and teach them the healing effects of art while attempting to unlock their true creative potential. Art has helped me deal with so much in the past and sharing this virtue with pediatric patients would be the best way to reap its benefits. 

I have already seen a difference emotionally and creatively with these patients, but my work will not be enough.
