EDUCACIÓN ARTÍSTICA EN LA COSTA CARIBE DE NICARAGUA

Caribbean Unity es nuestra primera Escuela Regional de Bellas Artes, ubicada en la ciudad de Bluefields, Costa Caribe Sur de Nicaragua; fundada por Miquel Hammond quien se enorgullece de decir que es afrodescendiente y miembro de la Comunidad Garífuna en Centroamérica.

Nuestra escuela no sólo se centra en enseñar a dibujar y pintar; nuestro propósito es formar instructores de artes que mantengan vivo el legado de esta maravillosa iniciativa. Tenemos un compromiso con nuestro pueblo, ya que somos muy conscientes de la diversidad étnica que existe en esta región y de lo importante que es para cada grupo mantener su cosmovisión, memorias colectivas e identidad cultural, esto por sí solo es una tarea de gran desafío.

Motivamos a nuestros estudiantes a aplicar un pensamiento crítico a sus obras de arte desde una perspectiva intercultural donde el respeto a uno mismo y a los demás es lo más valioso y una regla de oro. Esto es muy importante para ayudarlos a enfrentar los desafíos diarios desde múltiples perspectivas, permitiéndoles llevar adelante las transformaciones necesarias para hacer que sus comunidades sean más susceptibles a los cambios en este mundo global.

El objetivo principal de esta campaña es recaudar fondos para mantener el colegio funcionando, este es el tercer año de nuestro colegio, y la población estudiantil ha crecido de 15 alumnos en 2021 (el primer año), a 40 alumnos este año; 2024 es el año en el que tendremos la primera graduación. Necesitamos prepararnos para eso y también encontrar dinero para contratar más profesores. Nuestra escuela ha crecido de un grupo a tres grupos actualmente.

Esta escuela comenzó como un proyecto financiado con una subvención. Tiene un apoyo limitado de autoridades locales, municipales y regionales, por ejemplo: la casa de cultura municipal es donde desarrollamos las clases, tenemos una subvención económica para 3 docentes, 1 coordinador académico y 1 secretaria académica.

Estamos buscando fondos, nuestra meta es de $20,000 dólares americanos, para cubrir aportes económicos para 3 docentes, 1 director, un administrador y un comunicador, lo que nos permitirá tener nuestro equipo académico completo y poder dirigir todos nuestros esfuerzos a la formación de los estudiantes, formular y desarrollar un plan de autosostenibilidad del colegio.

Tú puedes apoyar y hacer posible los sueños de estos 40 jóvenes que aspiran a aprender más y continuar sus estudios para poder enseñar a otros en el futuro. Nuestra región es vulnerable económicamente hablando, hay una gran necesidad de empleos e infraestructura para crear trabajo que nos permita ser económicamente independientes.

Si nuestra escuela no supera esta crisis, cerrará y aplastará los sueños no solo de estos 40 estudiantes sino de todos los demás jóvenes que quieran tener la oportunidad de formar parte de la comunidad escolar. Ayudar a estos estudiantes a mantener vivo su legado cultural a través de sus artes impregnadas de sus raíces y legado ancestral. Al difundir los conocimientos recién adquiridos, se convierten en agentes de cambios en su comunidad, su región y su país.

ARTISTIC EDUCATION ON THE CARIBBEAN COAST OF NICARAGUA

Caribbean Unity is out first regional Fine Art School, located in the city of Bluefields, South Coast of, Nicaragua; founded by Miquel Hammond who is proud to say he is an African descendant and a member of the Garifuna Community in Central America.

Our school is not only focused on teaching how to draw and paint; our purpose is to form arts instructors who will keep alive the legacy of this wonderful initiative. We have a compromise with our people, been as we are very conscious of the ethnic diversity that exist in this region and how important it is for each group to maintain their cosmovision, collective memories and cultural identity, this alone is a task of great challenge.

We motivate our students to apply a critical thinking to their artwork from an intercultural perspective where self-respect and respect to others is most valuable and a golden rule. This is very important to help them face daily challenges from multiple perspective, allowing them to carry forward the transformations necessary to make their communities more susceptible to the changes in this global world.

The main objective of this campaign is to collect funds to keep the school going, this is our shcool´s third year, and the student’s population has grown from 15 students in 2021 (the first year), to 40 students this present year; 2024 is the year in which we´ll be having the first graduation. We need to prepare for that, and also find money to hire more teachers. Our school have grown from one group to three groups presently.

This school started as a project financed with a grant. It has a limited support of local, municipal and regional authorities for example: the municipal culture house is where we develop the classes, we have an economic subvention for 3 teachers, 1 academic coordinator and 1 academic secretary.

We are looking for funds, our goal is $20,000 US dollars, to cover economic contributions for 3 teachers, 1 director, an administrator and a communicator, which will allow us to have our academic team complete and be able to direct all our efforts to the training of students, formulate and develop a plan of self-sustainability for the school.

You can support and make possible the dreams of these 40 youngsters who aspires to learn more, and continue their studies in order to be able to teach others in the future. Our region is vulnerable economically speaking, there is a great need for jobs and infrastructure to create work that will enable us to be economically independent.

If our school don’t overcome this crisis it will close and crush the dreams of not only these 40 students but all other youngsters that want to get a chance to become a part of the school´s community. Help these students to keep their cultural legacy alive through their arts that are impregnated with their ancestral roots and legacy. By spreading their newly achieved knowledge they become agents of changes in their community, their region and their country.
