ARTA's Anti-Racist Theatre Training
In support of our four-pillar mission of advocacy, education, community, and opportunity, the Association of Regional Theatre Artists (ARTA) has programmed an anti-racist training to begin this important work in our Western New York theater community. In order to dismantle the systemic racism that affects our theater practices, we must acknowledge our own mixed fluency, i.e. the wide range of understanding about racism, and begin specific intentional practice toward anti-racism and healing.
To this end, ARTA seeks funding for a two-part training session led by Jacqueline Lawton, an Access, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion facilitator whose work centers around anti-racist initiatives, including creation of equitable and inclusive spaces, racial consciousness, effective allyship, application of intersectional racial equity, and much more. Jacqueline and ARTA officers have met to ensure that our training is tailored to our community's specific needs.

ARTA is partnering with the Theatre Alliance of Buffalo (TAB), which has graciously agreed to split the $4,000 cost of the training for ARTA Member Council and officers, TAB representatives, and some additional artistic directors. By starting work with these two organizations that offer the greatest cross-section of our community, we position these individuals to lead by example and set standards that can provide benchmarks for all WNY theater practitioners to follow. Going forward, ARTA hopes to share this knowledge with a goal of fostering a community that is not only inspiring but inclusive.
Thank you.
