Catherine has been diagnosed with a lung disease called idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) and additionally, non-alcoholic cirrhosis of the liver.
IPF is a condition which the lung tissue becomes thickened, stiff, and scarred over a period of time. The development of the scar tissue is called fibrosis. As the lung tissue becomes scarred and gets thicker, the lungs lose their ability to transfer oxygen into the bloodstream. As a result, she suffers from shortness of breath and dry coughing. IPF will cause the brain and other organs not to get the oxygen they need.
Cirrhosis occurs when the liver is permanently scarred or injured by chronic conditions and diseases.
The scar tissue that forms in cirrhosis harms the structure of the liver, blocking the flow of blood through the organ.
Over the past 2 years, she has gone from having periods of shortness of breath to being on 4.5 liters of oxygen at all times and 6-8 liters of oxygen with any exertion. She was given 6 months to live almost 2 years ago! Due to this, she was forced to stop working as a nurse, which was a life long dream that she did full heartedly! We love that she continues to have a positive attitude through it all!
At this time, there is no cure for IPF. Catherine will need to have a transplant for both lungs and her liver in the very near future. Duke Medical Center recommends preparing financially before they will consider beginning the transfer process. The contributions will be used for expenses such as: co-pays, medications, travel, food, and accommodations as she and caregivers will spend significant time near Duke for several months during this process.
