This past spring 2014 Alex was diagnosed with stage 3 Non-Seminoma, Mestastic, Testicular Cancer. This life altering news came quickly and since then Alex has been in treatment and on leave from his job teaching calculus at Brattleboro Union High School. Megan continues working full time at the VT Department of Labor out of financial necessity.
Alex's case is one of the most advanced seen at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center. However, because Alex was so healthy prior to his diagnosis we are nothing but optimistic that he will make a full recovery. Alex is currently on his 10th chemo treatment (go Al!!) and has ongoing neuropathy, numbness from spinal surgery, has had 3 vertebrae removed, 5 vertebrae transfused and is working on regaining his ability to write and to walk.
This will continue to be a difficult journey. As a dear friend I've struggled with how to best help and encourage them both. It is my hope that by creating this page I can build a broader network of support to Megan and Alex and personally take on the work of making their daily life easier. If you are able, please reach out to this couple in whatever way feels most comfortable. It is not about money. When staring cancer in the face it is more about love, community, and care.
