My name is April Joy and I am a cancer survivor who has for the second time in my life been hit by this awful disease.
When I was 27 I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. At the time I'd already watched my grandmother and my aunt suffer, struggle and eventually die, even after going through the harshest of treatments. I honestly considered leaving for Europe and living out my final days in fun but with the support of my family and friends I stuck it out and fought against Cancer and kicked it's ass! I underwent over a year of treatment, a bilateral mastectomy and reconstruction in the hope that it would never return again.
Unfortunately fifteen years later, it has returned and has spread to my lymphnodes. However the Doctors say we have caught it early but it will require a year of invasive surgeries, chemotherapy and radiation in order to make sure it never, ever returns this time. It's three types of chemo for roughly six months and then radiation therapy. During this time I won't be able to do any of my work as a fashion stylist, indie film costume designer or work in the boutique as I usually do, which are not only my work but my great passions in life.
I don't make a lot of money and I live in Los Angeles, which is quickly becoming one of the most expensive cities in the USA to live in. I've got a small apartment, and no way to pay for it or general living expenses while I'm unable to work and going through the treatments required to survive.
The treatments are currently schedulded to start on August 30th with my second surgery and September 20th with my first round of chemotherapy, so I will be unable to work and need help from my family, friends or the kindness of strangers before then.
It's really important to me to try and meet some of these goals so that I can continue to try and live my life while I fight this disease. I've beaten it once before and while this time it will be much harder, and much more of a struggle, I know, with your support, I can beat it again!
